Hello

I’m new at this and need some advice. I’m planing on making a few shorts and I’m looking into video cameras and all I can say is oh my god … there are so many choices

So I figured the best thing to do is ask a tribe… so any recommendation? My prices range in $1000 to $2000 … a lot of indoor shots, some out door

Thanks for any advice

My advice is to wait and invest in a camera in the $3,000-$3,500 range. I bought a DVX-100B for $3200 and I really love it. The 24P mode looks BEAUTIFUL, it's light, durable, and has some nice features (such as scene files). However, like all cameras, it does have some pitfalls I could do without: 1) you can't change lenses and 2) in some cases the cameras will drop resolution in certain parts of your picture.

The second problem is due to the fact that luminance is read off of the Green CCD chip. So if you have a scene that is bright red or bright blue (or bright purple) you might get some aliasing and blockiness. My friends and I have been trying to figure out how to counter this: Current theories include using a green filter, using flourescent lights (as they have a green color temperature), or just shooting without gels and adjusting color in post (this doesn't always provide alot of flexibilty though).

Now, if you really want to hold out while you save your Benjamins, then go for the HVX-200. You'll be able to do true Slow-motion with that camera (although you'll need a P2 card), and be able to capture images in true 16:0 aspect ratrio, with better color space, and higher resolution.

Thanks for the advice ... you’re the second person that’s told me to wait until I can buy a camera in the $4000 to $5000 range … I’ll continue to look around and do more research while I decide matters …

yeah even 3000 used is a leap. I have been shooting with a Sony PD-150 for years. It has paid for itself over an over again.

        amazing.

The panasonic mentioned is great too! Not as tough but rad picture!

so many cameras out there are great.
My advice is to rent one ans shoot for a whole day. see how it takes light at different ties of the day..what happens when you go in and out doors. look at ease of use and if the menus are easy to navigat eon the fly.

those things will help you make a choice too. HDV is here and looks smokin...but you can only use tha if you have HD editing soeftware and loads of freakin memory. So consider that If you throw down for that sweet camera...you will throw the rest of your dough down to pay for the editing tools.

        www.current.tv/watch/23109764

        all PD-150

the codec isn't great on the web but the footage smokes when in DVD and played at a screening on a real screen through a projector and on a bigish screen. It looked incredible.

I Just bought a Mini DV SONY HDR-HS7 for around $1500 and I love it. It has all the features I want (Manual exp & Focus etc, firewire, optical stab., mic in, HD 1080i which is editable in Final Cut Pro among many others..) I was alos told to wait, but I was unable because i needed something right away. I would reccomend this one for sure. It's a great high-end little camera and it does some amazing things. Check it out...

          :)
